More information : [NY 0529 3860] Roman signal tower No. 22A (1)
In 1962 Tower 22a was visible as a rectangular stony mound in the fairway of the golf course. (2)
At NY 0530 3862, on the edge of a fairway on the summit of a low ridge running parallel to the coast, is a low turf-covered mound, 0.1m high of indeterminate size and shape. This was verified on the ground by Bellhouse (3a) as the 'rectangular stony mound' noted by him as the site of tower 22a. This is entirely plausible; probing revealed a stony content of the mound in an area relatively free of stone, and the site lies about 485m from the proven site of milefortlet 22 (within 10m of the 'correct' measured position). Located on the English Heritage map of Hadrian's Wall 2010. (4) |
