Summary : The buried remains of Brownrigg North Tower 21B, part of the Roman frontier defences along the Cumbrian coast. The tower was visible as a cropmark on air photographs. The tower was originally of sandstone construction and is located on the seaward slope on the north-west side of Brownrigg Hill.
More information : [NY 0620 3920] Roman signal station 21b. (1) Tower 21B, situated on the seaward slope of a low hill called Brownrigg, was discovered by Bellhouse in 1962, and was subsequently excavated. (2-3) (NY 062 392) Cropmarks of the Roman coastal system identified during aerial observation. (4) (NY 062 392) Brownrigg milefortlet and tower 21b, scheduled. (5) The excavator, Mr RL Bellhouse (6a), pointed out the site of tower 21b at NY 0608 3919 on a slight terrace in a seaward-facing slope within a field of pasture. Probing revealed a distinct stony content in an area generally devoid of stone, but there is no trace of the tower above ground. (6) Scheduled (7) A Roman tower is visible as a cropmark on air photographs. The tower is rectangular in form and measures approximately 7m by 9m. (8) Located on the English Heritage map of Hadrian's Wall 2010. (9)
