Monument Number 899890

Hob Uid: 899890
Location :
Devon
Mid Devon
Bow
Grid Ref : SS7075001600
Summary : A probable Neolithic henge visible as cropmarks on air photographs. The enclosure is sub-oval and is a maximum of 60 metres across. Two roughly opposed entrances are visible, on the west and east sides. Within the enclosed area are cropmarks representing an irregular oval arrangement of 19 large post holes or pits. The monument is just visible on the gound, the bank surviving to a height of 0.3 metres and up to 1.5 metres wide. Fieldwalking has recovered over 800 flints from the field, including Mesolithic types as well as later Neolithic arrowheads and scrapers. A linear cropmark feature runs roughly north-south past the monument and appears to bow slightly in order to avoid the henge.
More information : (SS 7074 0168. Henge sited from Authy 1, fig 1, and OS 10000 1973)

A henge, apparently of Piggott's Class II type, has been located by aerial survey near Bow. It lies on the gentle NE facing slope of a low rise between 2 streams at ca 125m OD. Enclosing an area of some 40m by 45m, it measures ca 50m by 60m across the outer edges of the ditch, and there are traces of an external bank. The Eastern entrance is much narrower than the Western entrance. Within the ditch , an eccentric, irregular, oval of 19 pits is visible. The site has been field-walked, and 7 complete later Neolithic arrowheads, and part of 2 others were recovered. Only 19 scrapers were recovered. (1)

SS 7075 0160 (FCE) A rapid examination of air photography (2a) shows the cropmarks of this Neolithic henge, as described by authority 1. (2)

Bow. SS 708106 (sic). Included in a gazetteer of henge monuments and related sites.

Field walking by members of the Devon Archaeological Society yielded 828 flints including Mesolithic and later Neolithic types. (3)
