Historic England Research Records

Monument Number 310146

Hob Uid: 310146
Location :
Staffordshire
East Staffordshire
Stretton
Grid Ref : SK2604726695
Summary : Cropmark site, partly destroyed by the Burton by-pass and overlain by housing. One pit containing Iron Age pottery and one pit containing Roman pottery were found. The Roman pottery dated from C2nd to C3rd. A number of prehistoric penannular ditches are visible as cropmarks on air photographs. A conspicuous part has been built over on Next Perspectives PGA Tile: SK 2626 30th April 2007 photography.
More information : SK 261267. A site consisting of apparently penannular ditches and a
number of linear features was shown by aerial photography. The major
part of the site had already been destroyed by road works. Two large
pits containing dateable material were found, one with early Iron Age
pottery, the other with Roman pottery of 2nd-3rd century date. (1)

The site, where not overlaid by the Burton by-pass, has been recently
developed with housing. (2)

Listed by Challis and Harding as two large pits, one containing a
hearth and sherds under 'Undecorated Pottery of Middle La Tene
Type'. (3)

Ground markings approximately to those described by authorities 1 and
5 are visible on air photographs at SK 26092678. (4-5)

A number of prehistoric penannular ditches are visible as cropmarks on air photographs, centred at SK 2610 2670. It is suggested that the features represent barrows or hut circles and are likely to be associated with the settlement visible to the north west (UID 1516505). A conspicuous part of the monument has been built over on Next Perspectives PGA Tile: SK 2626 30th April 2007 photography.
