More information : NY 8999 4745. Medieval borough of Norham.
According to documents relating to Durham Cathedral, in 1160-1180 Bishop Hugh granted the burgesses of Norham the privileges of Newcastle on Tyne (a-b). In the Domesday Book, Norham is recorded as: "a borough of the bishop of Durham" (c). (1-1c)
In August 1999, English Heritage carried out a field observation on Norham Castle (NT 94 NW 1) (2). In the field to the south of the castle, centred at NT 9065 4735, is what appears to be a deserted defended settlement (see NT 94 NW 48). Its plan suggests it to be contemporary with the castle, which may imply that it equates to the C12th borough. |
