More information : SS 6680 4866. St. Martin's Church, Martinhoe. (1)
The precise date of early building of the Parish church of St Martin, Martinhoe is not known (2). The original font, now to be seen in St Petroc's Church, (SS 74NW10) is probably of Saxon origin (2). There was substantial rebuilding in Norman times, although completion in a form recognisable today was not until about 1200 AD. (2). The name board (3) states the church is 11th Century. Pevsner (4) says the chancel is of C1300, early C19 restoration (flat ceilings, semi-circular chancel arch) was swept away in 1866-7 by S.S. Teulon and the present font is dated 1864. (5) |
