More information : A light military railway was constructed after the outbreak of the First World War from the main Amesbury-Bulford Line at Ratfyn Junction (SU 162425) to Larkhill. Branch lines connected the Balloon School (SU 103449) past the Horse Isolation Hospital (SU 110438) through Fargo Plantation to Lake Down Aerodrome at Druid's Lodge. Spurs went to RAF/Handlay-Page Hangars at SU 110427 and Stonehenge Aerodrome (SU 11704185). Most appears on OS 6" second edition revised 1923, APs show it partly dismantled by 1932. Parts are visible as shallow cuttings and embankments. (1-2)
The course of the railway, including a branch to Bulford Camp, is visible as a structure on aerial photographs of the 1920s, but appears to have been largely dismantled by 1934. Its course has been included on the survey map produced by EH's Stonehenge WHS Mapping Project. (3-5) |
