Summary : Possible Medieval moat, suggested castle site, and fishponds. A castle is mentioned at Ravenstone between 1148 and 1153. Field investigation in 1972 found only a marshy tract and the fragmentary remains of fishponds. If a ditch for a moat ever existed it must have been mainly dry. There was no evidence to suggest that a castle was located here. |
More information : The whole of the moat, at Ravenstone with Snibstone, (SK 411131) may be traced round Grange Farm (SK 411 131); but the south-west only is well defined. (1)
Ravenstone Castle was the subject of a treaty between the Earl of Leicester and the Earl of Chester between 1148 and 1153. Possibly the earthwork at SK 411 131. (2)
The correctly published ponds entitled moat are now only a marshy tract and are located below Grange Farm which is on a sloping situation. Any surrounding ditch if it ever existed, must have been mainly dry. Immediately to the south, centred SK 4108 1306 are the non-surveyable fragmentary remains of two fishponds. Nothing was discovered during field investigation to associate this site with Ravenstone Castle. (3)
Listed by Cathcart King as a vanished castle. (4) |
