More information : (SJ 5082 8333) Possible site of Runcorn Norman Castle
A Castle is said to have stood on ground in Runcorn at a position where an earlier Anglo-Saxon Burgh (see SJ 58 SW 8), and fort are also recorded. The castle is mentioned in medieval documents, and there was a ferry on the site in the 12th century.(1-1c)
Field survey showed no remaining structures or earthworks on the site, which was being used as a bridge construction depot at the time of survey.(2-3)
