Summary : The site of a Bronze Age bowl barrow, listed by Goddard and Grinsell as Winterbourne Stoke 29. It was excavated in the early 19th century by Colt Hoare (Barrow 41), who found a possible primary cremation. The barrow was probably destroyed during the First World War by construction of the Night Camp (Monument Number 1362709) and was later ploughed. The location of the barrow appears to have been confused on Crawford's 6inch map (see Monument Number 219929).
More information : (SU10884279) Tumulus (AT) (site of) (TI) (1) Winterbourne Stoke 29. A bowl barrow 60ft in diameter and 3ft high. Excavations by Colt Hoare (Barrow 41) found a (?) primary cremation. (2-3) There are no visible remains of this barrow. (4) Originally recorded as Winterbourne Stoke by Goddard. (5) The location of this barrow falls within the area mapped from aerial photographs by both RCHME's Salisbury Plain Training Area NMP and EH's Stonehenge WHS Mapping Project, but the barrow was not recorded by either survey. It is probable that it was destroyed by the construction of a military camp (SU 14 SW 647) on this spot in the early twentieth century.
