More information : A stone-built powder magazine, which is situated at SD 3290 8174 on the west edge of Roudsea Wood beside the estuary of the River Leven, was planned and recorded by RCHME archaeological field investigators in January 1995 as part of the RCHME's Iron Industry and Related Woodland Industries of Furness Project. Documentary evidence shows that it was originally built and operated by the nearby Lowwood Gunpowder Works (SD 38 SW 26) during the 19th century in order to store powder temporarily, before shipment (1a). However, the magazine has been re-roofed and had windows inserted during its recent conversion into a summerhouse, so that the original features are somewhat obscured. Full survey details are included in the NMR archive. (1)
A detailed survey of the magazine was carried out by RCHME architectural field investigators in January 1999, also as part of the Furness Project. See plan and report in the NMR for full details. (2)
