Civil Bombing Decoy C2h

Hob Uid: 1467996
Location :
Stockton-on-Tees
Elton
Grid Ref : NZ3940018000
Summary : A Second World War bombing decoy site at Elton. It was built as part of the 'C-series' of civil decoys to deflect enemy bombing from Middlesbrough. This was a 'QF' night decoy, which consisted of a series of controlled fires lit during an air raid to replicate a target struck by bombs. It is referenced as being in use during 1943. Aerial photography from 1988 shows the partial remains of an earthen mound that would have surrounded a control building, which would have provided the site with an operations room and shelter for the decoy crew. Further civil bombing decoy sites for Middlesbrough were located at Grangetown, Bran Sands, Greenabella, Cowpen Bewley, Newton Bewley, Wolviston, Seal Sands, Middleton and Kirkleatham.
