More information : Burtree Pasture Mine, comprising the following elements: Midge Pits Vein, eight levels, one old level, at least nine hushes, including the Burtree Slits, one shaft, at least thirty five old shafts, including six Sedling old shafts, one bingstead, at least two water channels, nine sluices, nine dams and six old dams, including Level Head Dam, Grinding Dam and Sedling Dam, one smithy and one saw pit. Burtree Pasture Mine. Worked Burtree Pasture Vein (lead and fluorspar) and Wolfcleugh Old/Coptcleugh Vein. Worked in the 19th century by the Beaumonts, although original workings probably earlier than that. Between 1818-1883, part of Beaumonts period, the mine yielded 147324 tons lead concentrates. Under Weardale Lead Co, 1076 tons were produced up to its closure in 1890. Total output c.175000 tons. Reopened and worked for fluorspar by the Weardale Lead Co between 1970 and 1981. (3)
Mine was worked for at least 300 years prior to 1890. It was also worked by the London Lead Co. Main crushing and washing plants were housed in a single building. (4)
Sedling Vein was worked for fluorspar by Messrs Hinchcliffs from 1926 to 1930, producing 4657 tons. (5)
