Ting Mound

Hob Uid: 9745
Location :
Cumbria
South Lakeland
Lakes
Grid Ref : NY2987003180
Summary : Earthwork remains of a terraced moot mound - possibly Scandinavian in date.
More information : A terraced mound immediately W of Fell Foot, (NY 29870318),
of roughly rectangular form with rounded angles and a flat top.
There are two terraces on the N & E sides, three on the W and there
were apparently four on the S. The whole work is about 150' x 95'
and rises some 9' - 10'. (1)

This mound is remarkably similar in construction to the Tynwald Mount
on the Isle of Man and may be a Scandinavian "Law Ting" of similar
character and period. It is sited at the base of a series of
mountain passes and there are a number of Scandinavian place names in
the vicinity. (See plan). (2)

Description correct, surveyed at 1:2,500.
The mound is a natural feature artificially terraced, and
it has every appearance of a moot hill as suggested by Cowper. (3)

Scheduled terraced mound at Fellfoot Farm. (4)

NY 29860318 Moot mound at Fell Foot Farm, Little Langdale. The moot is known as the Ting Mound; it includes a flat-topped rectangular earthen mound with rounded corners which is up to 3m high with maximum dimensions of 50m by 40m. There are two terraces, each approximately 4m wide, on the mound's north and east sides, and three on the west side. The south side of the mound where originally there were four terraces, has been truncated by the construction of a concrete loading bay. The monument is similar in construction to the Tynwald Mount, the Scandinavian Law Ting on the Isle of Man; scheduled. (5)
