More information : [NY 27720275] Three Shire Stone or Threefoot Brandreth [NAT] (1)

The Shire Stone is a conspicious pillar erected shortly before 1860
by an Ambleside resident who thought that the original Shire Stones
were too inconspicuous. These were three separate stones no more than
6 ft apart, each placed within one of the countries of Cumberland,
Westmorland and a detached portion of Lancashire. (2)

The "Shirestones upon Wrenose" are mentioned in 1576, Brandreth was
an Old Norse word meaning a grate, gridiron or tripod. (3)
