Hob Uid: 1468251
Location :
Lancashire
West Lancashire
Great Altcar
Grid Ref : SD3470003800
Summary : A Second World War bombing decoy site at Lydiate. It was built as part of the 'C-series' of civil decoys for Liverpool to deflect enemy bombing from Aintree marshalling yard. The site functioned as both a 'QF' and 'QL' decoy. The 'QF' decoy consisted of a series of controlled fires lit during an air raid to replicate a target struck by bombs. The 'QL' decoy displayed railway marshalling yard lighting, tram flashes and loco glows to simulate Aintree. The site is referenced as being in use between 1941 and 1943. Aerial photography from 1975 shows a control building standing at the site and its protective earthen mound visible as a grassmark. The control building would have housed an operations room and provided the decoy crew with shelter. Lydiate was one of fourteen civil bombing decoy sites for Liverpool.
