Hob Uid: 9986
Location :
Cumbria
Allerdale
Westward
Grid Ref : NY2730044800
Summary : A Roman inscribed stone and the base of a pilaster are reported to have been found here. The finds are in Carlisle Museum.
More information : [NY 27304480] A pice of red sandstone measuring 9" x 6"
and inscribed COH VIIII was found at Westward Vicarage in 1901.
Haverfield says "it is one of the usual building records set up by
the 9th Cohort of some legion" (1) but JRS says "this little
sandstone slab inscribed COH VIIII appears to be a forgery (2) Also
found at the same place was the moulded base of a pilaster 6" high.
Both of these must have come from the camp at Old Carlisle [NY 24 NE
1(1)] now in Carlisle Museum (EE9, 1130) (3) (1)(2)(3)
