Full description

Probable eighteenth or nineteenth century milestone beside A413 south of Wendover just north of Great Missenden. Squared stone pillar 21 to 24 inches high and 13 by14 by15 inches deep with chamfered top. Incised inscription with black paint: LONDON 32 MISSENDEN 1 on side facing road. Incised also on SE face but not readable. [ Drawings, location and photographs available ] (B1).
Recorded as present in 2003 on Milestones Society updated in 2010 website on A413 Amersham to Aylesbury route National ID number BU_LC32. On Aylesbury Road Great Missenden 'on well kept grass verge by The Lodge.' On east side of road 34cm wide 33cm deep 62 cm high. Inscription: front: LONDON 32 MISSENDEN 1. Confirmed by handwritten notes on microfiched OSD surveyors drawings (1814) and 1" OS map (1835) were in Bucks County Museum now in Centre for Bucks Studies. Museum number 38 sheet XXXVIII page 4 of notes. Wendover to Amersham ( C4 + C3 ) route. Inscription: London 32. Also in same notes under Milestones - Types ' 1/2 Mile from River Colne to Aylesbury - C2, C3, C3. Stone. Flat face parallel to road. 4 - sided. Except- Bedgrove ( London 39) - angled to road lettered on 2 sides'. Note O.S. maps will show present positions - may not coincide with historical positions. In same notes under "MILESTONES ( In site 1986 except ? ) and in red C 1/2/3/4/5/6/7 L1". On 1" OS 1835, Bryant and Jefferies. 32: Leather Lane on R going N. According to Peter Gullands extensive study of The Toll Roads of Buckinghamshire 2017. This milemarker is on The Wendover and Oak Lane Turnpike Road 1751 p.129 road 8.This sretched from from the junction of Aylesbury Road and Wharf Road Wendover to the junction of Oxford Road and Oak Lane Tatling End. It is mostly the A413 through the bypassed villages of Wendover Great Misseenden squara milesones with a pyramidal top with incription on one face and london and parish south of great misenden incised capital letters.in 1831 the trustees paid 17.17 they ran from 19 miles to london souh of oak lane at chalfont st peter to london 25 in south street wendover, This is one of 116 records out of a possible 230 from sources in Bucks according to PG. After the trusts closed in 1880s and 1890s missing milemarkers of some roads in Bucs with standard metal posts with 2 white faces and black lettering that the Milestones Society calls Buck Pressings. During WW2 milemarkers were moved for security reasons and sometimes not put back at all or sometimes wrong place. [Copy in HER] (B4).
