Summary

Bishop Gate, a medieval gatehouse built as part of the defensive circuit around the city. The gatehouse was constructed in about 1355 and was demolished in 1764.

Full description

1> Bishop Gate (site).
2> Erected c1355, demolished 1764.
3> Depicted.
4> Bishop Gate ('porta episcopi') in existence by 1411, and was rebuilt in 1689,
for re-use as habitation by 1691. Appears to have been a rectangular
2-storeyed building with embattled parapets.
