Full description

'Flashmire'; believed to be the site of the Roman ferry terminal, described by de la Pryme in 1696 and by Stukely in 1724. Edward Trollope in 1868 recorded that ' a collection (of Roman coins) from Flashmire' (which he identifies as the present Winteringham Haven, centred on SE 935 229) 'was brought to myself when I visited the site of Ad Abum in 1855.'

The name "Flashmire" is marked on OS 1 in. 1st Ed. 1824 at SE 938 228 (near present Winteringham Haven), on OS 6 in. 1855 further E at SE 947 216, and on OS 1:10,000 1972 at SE 947 215. Cropmarks show a road in this area running along a low ridge towards the Humber Bank. (Dudley 1949, 147-149, refs. and accounts; Riley 1974, 375-7 fig. 1)

Trollope also stated that: 'A discovery was made here (Winteringham), and at Brough., during the remarkably dry summer of 1826, when the Humber was very low, viz., the remains of a raised causeway, or jetty, stretching out from both places, similar to the vadum descent in the Trent at Littleborough, and apparently of Roman construction.' [1, 2]

An Ordnance Survey field inspector visited this area in 1964 and could see northing of interest. He noted that Mr H Brumby recalled a 'large platform and spread mound' overlooking a natural hollow, but these had been ploughed away. This area (SE94802163) was considered by him and other locals as the original haven and ferry terminal. [3]
