Full description
Site of a Second World War heavy anti aircraft battery, west of Baysgarth Farm. Designated 'Humber T' or 'Humber H24', it was listed as unarmed in 1942, and was manned by 270 Battery of the 91st Royal Artillery Regiment in 1940. The outline of the four emplacements is clearly visible, along with the internal access roads. [1]
Ground photographs of this battery were posted on a local website in 2009. The surviving brick structures were in reasonably good condition at that time. [2]
Aerial photograph, 1991. [3]
38 photographs of the remains of the battery, taken during a site visit in February 2013. [4]
Post-War 6" Ordnance Survey maps showed a large group on ancillary buildings to the west, north and east of the battery.
There were 3 Nissen-hut sized buildings to the west, with up to 8 smaller structures.
North of the trackway were 9 Nissen sized buildings, and one 60 metre-long rectangle, either a large building or a hardstanding.
To the east of the battery were 2 small structures. The most easterly was probably a guardhouse. [5]
51 photographs, taken during a site visit to the former camp north of the trackway, October 2014. The remains of some strutures could be seen within undergrowth, including brick hut bases surviving up to 7 courses, and inspection pits for the sewerage system. A concrete hardstanding to the west was in use for storage of straw bales. [6]
