Summary

Excavation of foundations in 1972 revealed a rubbish pit containing 13th and 14th century pottery fragments. On a different part of the site, an occupation layer was found, associated with a piece of medieval pottery, ash, oyster shell and animal bones.

Full description

1972. Excavation for foundations behind site NHER 47 in Holland Court.
Topsoil; post medieval sherds and drainpipes.
Natural sand.
Rubbish pit of dark grey organic soil, with some flint gravel.
Contained 13th/14th century sherds (including Grimston face jug). Bone, oyster shells.

Exposed in a pit for a concrete drainage tank in northeast corner of the site. About 2 1/2m below the pathway surface.
Occupation surface overlying the natural sand, consisting of a compact very ashy, layer about 10 to 15cm thick.
Contained one sherd Thetford ware, charcoal, ash, oyster shell, bone.
