A series of clay-lined pits of probable 16th century date identified during archaeological excavations to the south of Sandford Street in 2002. Interpreted as a the remains of a tannery. Further evidence for tanning activity of similar date has been identified to the north of Sandford Street (see PRN 50358).

    Full description

    A series of clay-lined pits, similar to those seen during excavations on the northern side of Sandford Street (see PRN 50358) were identified during an archaeological evaluation in 2002 and were interpreted as the remains of 16th century tanning pits. Further evidence for the tanning industry, in the of worked bone and horn cores, was recovered several pits also identified during the evaluation. (JM, 27/3/03) <1>
