Full description
'Upper Castle Hays Farm' is shown on the 1st Edition Ordnance Survey map of 1884. (JM, 29/4/03) <1>
The farm, also known as Goodwin's Farm from the name of the family who occupied it, was totally destroyed in an accidental explosion in the underground RAF bomb store in 1944 (see PRN 50421 and 50422). The explosion left a crater measuring 800 ft long by 300 ft wide by 120 ft deep, killing all four occupants of the farm, one farm labourer, and all the livestock. (JM, 29/4/03) <2>
The isolated farmstead was laid out around a loose, three-sided courtyard with detached farmhouse. (SB, 20-Jul2-105) <3>
