A turnpike route comprising five branches linking Cheadle with Thorpe, Wetley Rocks, Ipstones, Ellastone and Rocester amongst other smaller settlements. The turnpike was first recorded in the mid 18th century, through some branches were not turnpiked until the 19th century.

Full description

A turnpike road running for a total distance of 50.9 miles over five branches. The toll road linked the town of Cheadle to Blythe Marsh, Blore and Thorpe (in Derbyshire) with a spur from Ruehill to Froghall Bridge; to Wetley Rocks with a spur from Forsbrook via Dilhorne to Blakeley Lane; to Ipstones, Bottom House and Butterton Moor End; to Ellastone and to Tean, Hollington and Rocester. Overall the route had 26 main gates and 11 side gates. The turnpike was first mentioned in 1762, though the branches from Cheadle to Ellastone and Rocester were not turnpiked until 19th century.
