Full description

Road bridge: A narrow bridge across the River Dove near its confluence with the River Trent. The bridge has four rounded arches with large triangular bastions. Later widened by building on the northern bastions. <1>

The bridge is of probable 15th century date. <2>

In 1225 annals of Burton Abbey showed that no-one was responsible for the repair of the bridge so the prior, John de Stretton, rebuilt it at his own expense. This was an earlier bridge however as it is considered that the arches of the present bridge are too wide for a bridge of this date. <3>

Permission for repair works to the bridge was granted in April 2004. (SB, 05-May-2004) <4>
