Historic England Research Records

Monument Number 1058729

Hob Uid: 1058729
Location :
Lincolnshire
West Lindsey
Bardney
Grid Ref : TF1134070570
Summary : Post Medieval house and walled garden recorded from documentary sources.
More information : Documentary research indicates that after the Benedictine monastery
of Bardney (see TF 17 SW 2) was dissolved in 1538 the site was
granted to Sir Robert Tyrwhitt. Part of the buildings were turned
into a secular residence, utilising the abbot's lodgings on the
west side of the cloister (TF 1134 7057). The latter was sealed off
to form a walled garden. This had probably been abandoned by
1663-4, when Edward Maddison bought the site.

A road (see TF 17 SW 7) and mound (TF 17 SW 4), which lie to the
east of Barney Abbey, are possibly formal garden features (a
carraigeway and prospect mound), associated with this Post Medieval
house and garden.
