Grid Ref : TQ3369080614
Summary : Martin Tower at the Tower of London was built between 1238 and 1275 in the north east corner of the curtain wall. It was much altered and refaced in brick in the late 17th and early 18th centuries. It is a D-plan angle tower with two rectangular turrets to the west and north. It originated with 2 storeys but a third was added in the late 17th century. It housed the Crown Jewels from 1669 and also provided accommodation for the Jewel Keeper in the 1720s until the provision of a new Jewel House. It was not restored significantly like some of the other towers of the inner curtain wall, recent alterations in 1905 saw some rebuilding on the east face parapet and the insertion of some sash windows. The lower floor of the Martin Tower now contains the Jewel House Shop.
