Grange Hall

Hob Uid: 13374
Location :
Cumbria
Eden
Asby
Grid Ref : NY6846010910
Summary : A farmhouse, originally grange of Byland Abbey, established in the 14th century. It is made from coursed, squared rubble with quoins. The parapet projects on all 4 sides. The upper works were altered to accommodate a graduated slope roof, possibly in the 17th century. An original stone chimney projects to the rear, and the west end chimney was built in the 17th century. There is a late 19th century porch. Extensions were made in the late 18th century and in the late 19th century. An outbuilding to the rear was joined to the house in the late 19th century.
More information : (NY 68461091) Grange Hall (NAT) (1)

Grange Hall nearly 1-1/2m. S. of the church, is of three-storeys; the
walls are of rubble and the roofs are slate-covered. The main block
was built in the 15th century and probably formed the S. wing of a
larger building extending to the N. It was altered in the 17th
century, when the turret-staircase seems to have been added and the
roof rebuilt. The existing N. and S. wings are late 18th or early
19th-century additions.

The original oriel window is an unusual feature. The main block is
faced with squared stone and has remains of the original parapet on
the N. and S. sides.

Near the house is a stone well-head, probably of Medieval date. (2)

See photographs of Grange Hall. The well-head built of
ashlar blocks (including the pitched roof), measures 1.4m. x 1.8m.
and stands 1.6m. high, with a doorway, leading to steps down, in the
W end - trees preclude photography. (3)
