Monument Number 423745

Hob Uid: 423745
Location :
Cornwall
Cornwall
Madron
Grid Ref : SW4266835086
Summary : Mound near Men-An-Tol - possibly, but not definitely, a cairn.
More information : At SW 42623502, 90 m north of the Men-an-tol a mound 0.9m
high, overgrown with bracken was discovered in field
investigation. In the centre is a shallow depression 2.0m in
diameter and 0.2m deep. Within this depression can be seen the
top edge of a buried stone 1.3m long, orientated NW-SE.
It appears to be a bowl barrow, and this view is strengthened
by its situation, on high moorland near the Men-an-tol. The stone
in the centre may be the fallen side stone, or capstone, of a
cist.
A 25 inch survey has been made. (1)

SW 42683504. Listed under barrows with the simple description
'mound'. (2)

The mound is 9.0m in diameter and is quite circular with the
appearance of a cairn, overgrown with grass and bracken. Its
construction of spar stone is unusual and unless there was a
deliberate search to collect this the mound is more like a dump
of mined stone.
It is also suspicious that, being so near the frequently visited
Men-an-tol, it was evidently ignored by 19th century antiquarians.
Possibly a barrow or cairn but should be treated with reserve.
Surveyed at 1:2500. (3)
