Summary : The medieval remains of the Wardrobe Tower at the Tower of London incorporates the base of a Roman bastion semi-circular in plan and apparently hollow. The tower is thought to have been built between 1189 and 1216. It stands at the south east corner of the White Tower and now consists of rubble masonry of stone and broken brick standing to a height of about 7ft. A clock turret was added in 1673 but was considered to be of a dangerous narrow design and was removed in 1715. The tower was linked to the south-east corner of the White Tower with a buttresses wall which was demolished in 1883. The monument was partially demolished in 1879 by John Taylor who had ben employed to direct restoration works at the Tower. |
