Summary : Second to fourth century Roman pottery has been found in Whorlton churchyard; a late fourth century Roman ditch was also uncovered during exavations in the churchyard and was traced for 42 metres. |
More information : (NZ 4829 0243) Roman Pottery found AD 1907 (NAT) (1) Roman pottery of the C2nd - C3rd was found in an extension to Whorlton churchyard in 1907 (2) or 1909 (3). In 1976 C4th pottery was found in the same locality. Excavation by R Inman in 1977 within the area of a proposed churchyard extension revealed a ditch 0.8m wide and 0.2m deep running N-S across the area and which was traced for 42m. It was dated to the late C4th by associated pottery. In the topsoil were further Roman sherds along with C13th sherds and many green glazed fragments. Finds are in the Dorman Museum, Middlesbrough. (This site falls within the area of Whorlton deserted Medieval Village - NZ 40 SE 5). (2-6)
