Summary : A Second World War bombing decoy site at Frithville that was built to deflect enemy bombing from Royal Air Force Coningsby airfield. This was a 'Q-type' night decoy, which displayed a sequence of lights to simulate an active airfield. Frithville also operated as a decoy for the Manby armament training station. It is referenced as being in operation during 1942. By 1970 an uncovered shelter still remained in good condition at the site, and part of a blast wall survived. Further bombing decoy sites for Royal Air Force Coningsby airfield were located at Hagnaby and Sibsey, and a further decoy for Manby located at Mablethorpe. |
More information : A Second World War 'Q-type' bombing decoy located at Frithville (TF 298 496). It was constructed to deflect enemy night bombing from RAF Coningsby and Manby. In operation on 12-AUG-1942. Further bombing decoys for RAF Coningsby and Manby were located at Hagnaby (TF 352 618) and Sibsey (TF 367 528). (1)
By 1970 an uncovered shelter with entrances survived in good condition along with part of a blast wall, as shown by aerial photography. (2)
