Grid Ref : TR1544057740
Summary : A 16th century building approximately 7 metres square located outside the Abbey building immediately to the south of the south aisle between the charnel chapel and a possible porch leading into the abbey from the lay cemetery. The purpose of the building is unclear. It may have been built some time after the Dissolution although this would mean that it would have had a life of only 15 years. The footings of the building are insubstantial and poorly made and this suggests that the building was a temporary construction possibly used as a workshop by the men engaged in dismantling the abbey.
More information : (TR 15425774 - see illustration card for plan). A rectangular
structure 7.10m x 6.90m constructed of chalk blocks bonded with
pink mortar, located in 1975 by H Woods during excavations for
DOE to S of nave. This building rests on the Medieval ground
surface sealing the graves of the lay cemetery. It was possibly
erected after the Dissolution in 1538, but if so it would have
had a life of only 15 years as the S aisle walls were demolished
in 1553. (1-2)
