Summary : Earthworks of three large rectilinear enclosure of a Mediaeval monastic grange and hamlet of Linton. The hamlet was extant in 1086 and became a grange of Malton Priory in the 14th century. It may have been a possession of Scarborough alien priory (see SE97SW22).
More information : (SE 91087069) Earthwork (NR) (1)

"I can find no reason to call these earthworks (also SE 97 SW 5) earlier than 1066, or indeed, of any specific age".
Partly visible on RAF APs. (2 - 3)

This earthwork consists of a bank, 2.0-3.0m wide and up to 0.8m high and appears to be no more than the NE, SW and SE sides of an old garth. The slight ditch on the SE, uphill side was probably for drainage. (4)

(SE 91057075) Supposed (NAT) Camp (NR)
(SE 90807090) Old Banks (NAT) (5)

SE 909708. Monastic grange at Linton (Gilbertine). Three large earthwork enclosures, all roughly rectangular in outline, set in a north-south direction. The modern farmhouse, occupying the central enclosure, may well have taken the place of the medieval buildings of the grange (see SE 97 SW 22). The Gilbertines of Malton acquired the hamlet of Linton but the estate was not listed as a grange in the 14th century cartulary although it had certainly acquired full status by the suppression of the priory (see Malton Priory SE 77 SE 48). In 1545 the farm of Linton was re-assigned to a William Fuller. (6)

Linton mentioned at Domesday 1086 (7) but the village can never have been very large (8). (7 - 9)

At SE 9076 7084 are a few linears seen as cropmarks (though it looks as though the earthworks survive) on air photos that are probably associated with the features variously described by authors 1-8. (9)
