Summary : The Well Tower at the Tower of London was built between 1275 and 1285. It was rebuilt above the Wall-Walk level in the mid-nineteenth century. It comprises a rectangular 2 storey tower with rectangular staircase turret to north-east. There are 2 chutes on the south wall for drawing water which evidently gave rise to the building's name. Attached to the north wall is part of the cross wall to the Salt Tower. The upper masonry was refashioned during the reign of Edward III (1327-1377). Extensive restoration work was undertaken by A Salvin in 1879 including the removal of the upper floor and its rebuilding and capping with a concrete roof.
