Summary : A well-preserved earthwork platform defines the possible site of a 1796 gun battery. Scheduled and in guardianship.
More information : (TA 0512 8900) Earthwork remains of a possible gun battery of 1796, part of the Scarborough Castle complex.

In October-November 1998, the Royal Commission on the Historical Monuments of England carried out an analytical field survey of Scarborough Castle (Parent Record TA 08 NW 35; Event Record 1205090).

The possible site of the gun battery is defined by a level terrace cut into the natural slope. Two sides of the terrace are defined by a scarp up to 0.4m high cut into the slope whilst the other two sides are defined by a discontinous slight scarp up to 0.1m high. For further details, see the detailed report held in the NMR archive, which includes versions of the 1:1000 scale plan and extracts from historic maps. The remainder of the archive material is also available from the NMR. (1)

The battery was built in 1796 and its position appears on a map published two years later. (1a) The battery had been dismantled by 1832. (1b)
