Terraced garden and landscape setting for house (SE 67 NW 1), approx. 30ha around the house with at least 120ha of former parkland to south-west. History uncertain. House dramatically set on end of spur, below which are four narrow terraces of uncertain date. Some fine garden ornaments, including C19th fountain. To the west large areas of woodland, grassed plain, straight drive (The Avenue] and fish ponds. Licence to empark 1000 acres was granted in the C14th. Gilling belonged to the Fairfax family 1492-1793. (1)
