Location :
North Yorkshire

Summary : Probable Roman ditch, visible as a cropmark, previously thought to be part of a Roman camp, now believed to relate to land allotment.
More information : Cropmark at SE 2269 9875 of a ditch forming a straight line with a break constituting a simple gateway, and a rounded corner. It has the appearance of being the southern boundary of a Roman camp. (1)

This site has been re-assessed in connection with RCHME's survey and publication of Roman Camps in England. The following descriptive account is taken from the published text.

SE 2269 9875. Immediately to the E of the modern A1 road and W of Dere Street, the cropmark of an E to W ditch with an entrance gap has been claimed as a possible Roman temporary camp. It more probably relates to the land allotment, cemetery plots or ribbon development, which excavation has shown to have spread S of Catterick town along the fringes of the Roman road. Transcribed at 1:2500. Full information is included in the NMR Archive. (2)

This feature, and other cropmarks in the area, was transcribed at 1:10,000 scale as part of the RCHME: Catterick Project. (3)
