More information : Cropmark at SE 2269 9875 of a ditch forming a straight line with a break constituting a simple gateway, and a rounded corner. It has the appearance of being the southern boundary of a Roman camp. (1)
This site has been re-assessed in connection with RCHME's survey and publication of Roman Camps in England. The following descriptive account is taken from the published text.
SE 2269 9875. Immediately to the E of the modern A1 road and W of Dere Street, the cropmark of an E to W ditch with an entrance gap has been claimed as a possible Roman temporary camp. It more probably relates to the land allotment, cemetery plots or ribbon development, which excavation has shown to have spread S of Catterick town along the fringes of the Roman road.
