More information : A large possible Second World War bomb crater is visible on aerial photographs of 1946 as an earthwork to the north-east of the sound mirrors at Denge (Monument Number 462809). This feature was mapped from aerial photographs as part of the South East RCZAS NMP project.
The bomb crater is centred at TR 0770 2174, approximately 145m to the north-east of the sound mirror site. The crater measures 19m in diameter and has a small banked rim around the edge. It is thought this may be a result of the loose shingle characteristic of the ground in this area, which would have been upcast by the explosion.
The bomb crater is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs of 1946. By the time of the next available vertical aerial photograph of 1959; this area had been excavated as part of a gravel pit (1-2). |
