More information : SK 628 970 (group-centred): Cropmarks of a lane/trackway and rectilinear field system, east of Hunster Grange. The side ditches of the lane are 15 m apart near the railway line and 12 m near point B, where they are joined, but not crossed, by some field boundary ditches. At SK 629 973 is a large field of 4 ha which does not fit into the pattern of long boundaries. Possibly Iron Age in date. (1)
Iron Age /Roman field boundaries, ditches, double ditched trackway, a ditched rectilinear enclosure and a square ditched enclosure are visible as cropmarks on air photographs, centred at SK 6290 9792. Remains of a rural Iron Age/Roman landscape consisting of a co-axial field system are visible over an area of approximately 188ha on a north south alignment. Some boundaries form long rectangular fields with an average width of 98m and length of 238m. An intermittently visible long sinuous trackway runs on the same alignment to the field system. The feature appears to cut across the field boundaries at SK 6266 9695. A length of a further trackway is also visible at SK 6358 9883. At SK 6347 9888 there is a square enclosure embedded within the field system. This measures 30m by 28m and has an associated field boundary. At SK 6240 9693 there is a rectilinear enclosure. This lies on a field corner and measures 19m by 28m.
It is suggested this is part of an extensive 'brickwork' field system. (2-4)
