Monument Number 1547562

Hob Uid: 1547562
Location :
Medway
Frindsbury Extra
Grid Ref : TQ7489572166
Summary : A possible Second World War bomb crater is visible as earthworks on aerial photographs, and has been mapped as part of the English Heritage: Hoo Peninsula Landscape Project. Aerial photographs taken in June 1942 show a crater surrounded by an area of freshly disturbed earth 21.75m by 13.6m overall. The feature is associated with a system of practice trenches, part of an extensive military training ground mainly dating to the First World War (Monument 1545095), and could represent the result of Second World War training in mine laying and explosives. If this feature is a bomb crater, it may be evidence of an (apparently minor) air raid on Lodge Hill which took place on the night of 7-8 May 1942, and may be associated with another crater 570m to the south (Monument 1547561). The Lodge Hill Armaments Depot (Monument 1077634) and Chattenden Magazines (Monument 1481790) lie to the north east, within 2km of this site. Chattenden Barracks (Monument 1545088) is located 645m to the east.
