Historic England Research Records

Monument Number 866772

Hob Uid: 866772
Location :
Somerset
Somerset West and Taunton
Minehead Without
Grid Ref : SS9338047660
Summary : Three earthworks were alleged at this location but could not be found on the ground during recent field investigation. Aerial photographs taken in 1946 show numerous tank tracks, mainly orientated from east to west. The later photography shows a possible rectangular enclosure at this location but this is probably due to the earlier Second World War tank training (SS 94 NW 140).
More information : SS 93324766. These rough earthworks surrounded by a broken boundary. They may be the bases of beacons referred to in Hancock (a) (1)

No trace of these features could be found at the NGR cited. (2)

The earthworks referred to above (1-1A) cannot be clearly identified from the available aerial photography. Aerial photographs taken in 1946 show numerous tank tracks, mainly orientated from east to west. The later photography shows a possible rectangular enclosure centred at SS 9338 4766 but this is probably due to the earlier Second World War tank training (SS 94 NW 140, UID 1132199). (3-4)
