Hob Uid: 188395
Location :
Somerset
Somerset West and Taunton
Nettlecombe
Grid Ref : ST0440038000
Summary :

Castle Hill is the name given to a field recorded in the 1838 Nettlecombe tithe apportionment.  It is annotated as field number 234 on the tithe map and listed in the apportionment as owned by Sir John Trevelyan and occupied by John Gatehill.  It is recorded as in arable.  There is a substantial, probably prehistoric or Roman, earthwork enclosure (see Historic England research record No. 188391) in the field and it may have been associations with this that gave the field its name.

More information :

Standing barley prevented examination of this field. (See ST 03 NW 11 for cropmark in adjacent field). (2)

The name "Castle Hill" probably refers to the large enclosure of possible Iron Age date in the adjacent field to the east. See NMR UID 188391. (3)
