More information : [Area centred SE 6620 6450] East Lilling [LB] (Site of). (1) The village was probably depopulated before 1485. In a survey of 1607 the buildings had been reduced to the Manor House only, and by 1625 the site had been abandoned. Excavations were carried out in 1949. (2) The remains are firmly delineated by boundaries on three sides, and by a curving grass road on the south. Several minor roads cross the inhabitated area, one of which is traceable in a N.W. direction. The remains are well-defined, though in general, house sites are visible only as parch marks. Re-surveyed at 1:2,500. (3)

The surviving earthworks of the village were surveyed in detail at a scale of 1:1000 as part of a selective sampling of medieval earthwork sites in Ryedale by the RCHME. A plan and a full description of the development of the village have been published. (5)
The main elements of the village were seen on air photgraphs and copied from the plan produced by the previous survey (5). An associated field system of ridge and furrow cultivation was also recorded from air photographs (see SE 66 NW 23) as part of the Vale of York National Mapping Programme Project. (6)
