Grid Ref : SE8089098330
Summary : Remains of a cist of uncertain period in the side of an excavated road. Site of two other cists.
More information : (SE 8089 9833) Two cists on the edge of Wade's Causeway
(RR 81b), first noticed by Mr J Patterson in the 1920's were
examined on exposing the metalling of the road in 1937. The
southernmost Cist No 3n (see plan) was 38ft S of the NW-SE wall and
measured 66 x 37 ins;when first found it had a capstone and contained
a crouched inhumation. Cist No 4n, in a similar position 17ft S of
the wall, was empty but apparently undisturbed. The capstone 37 x 27
ins was 3-9 ins above ground level. A third cist mentioned by
Patterson, was not located, unless an unusual setting of stones just
to the N had been mistaken as a cist. (1)

Position of cists indicate late burial, probably Romano-British
or Saxon. (2)

The two cists are in fair condition and are as described. Surveyed
at 1:10 000.

The unusual setting of stones referred to lies 12.0m north of the
wall and in no way resembles the remains of a cist. (3)

Only one cist, that which contained the skeleton, was found by RCHME
in the course of the Wheeldale Survey at SE 8089 9833. It seems to be
later than the construction of the road as it appears to overlie the
W kerb. (1)
