Summary : An extension of the City and South London Railway to Angel on 17th November 1901 included intermediate stations at City Road (closed in 1922) and Old Street. Old Street was designed by TP Figgis and included Figgis's recurring motifs of rustication and stone strings. Services for the Great Northern and City arrived in 1904. In 1922 the station closed for remodelling and re-opened on 20th April 1924. The remodelling was undertaken by the architect Charles Holden who was commissioned by Frank Pick. The ticket hall was rebuilt after the installation of escalators and TP Figgis's station facade was replaced with biscuit-cream faience slabs and black tile copings to the parapet walls. In 1968 the station was completely rebuilt. Services on the Great Northern and City Railway ceased in 1975 with the line transferred to British Railways in 1976 for through running of electric trains from Moorgate to Hertfordshire. |
