More information : SD 583064. Wigan. 3 timber buildings fronting a gravel street were excavated immediately south of The Wiend in 1983. The earliest was at least 13m long, divided by partitions. The second phase was more substantial, over 20m long, and the latest structure was indicated by stone-packed post-pits. Dating appears to run from the early C2nd to early C3rd AD. (1)
SD 58160574 excavations on the Hallgate in 1990 yielded no structures, suggesting this site was on the (western) edge of the Roman settlement. Stray pottery of 2nd century date, including overfired sherds, may suggest the presence of a kiln in the vicinity. (2) |
