Summary : The site of Aldeburgh coastal battery, an emergency battery built during the Second World War as part of Eastern Command's coastal defences. It was commissioned in May 1940 and by January 1941 mounted two 6-inch ex-naval guns. It was initially manned by 328 Coast Battery Royal Artillery, until it was handed over to the Home Guard from 1943 until the guns were reduced to care and maintenance in 1944. It was then attended by 354 Battery of 547 Coast Regiment. Aerial photography from 1997 shows that the site is occupied by housing and a seafront area and no features of the battery remain. |
