Summary : Linear earthwork forming part of the Wold Entrenchments, a late prehistoric boundary complex, possibly Bronze Age in date. Argham Dikes extends from Reighton to near Rudston, a distance of five miles and comprises three banks and two ditches, parts survive as cropmarks. |
More information : (TA 10156805 - 12237389) Argam Dikes (NR) (1) Argam Dike stretches from Reighton (TA 130753) for about 5 miles to very near Rudston, and formerly reached to the stream called Gypsey Race (TA 10006742), if not farther. The best parts consisted of three banks and two ditches, a width of about 35 paces (a), although a portion at Rudston consisted only of a bank not more than 6 ft high. Considered by Pitt-Rivers to be part of a great military system of defence against an enemy from the W. (2) Soil mark visible on APs. (3) Published survey (25") revised. (4)
The cropmark remains of parts of this system of later Prehistoric linear ditched boundaries described by the previous authorities were seen and mapped from recent aerial photographs. One ditch seen extending between TA 1098 7590 and 1139 7588 was previously unrecorded. Parts of the system were previously mapped as part of the Yorkshire Wolds NMP project. (5) |
